Shadow/Highlight Correction in Photoshop CS5
Ever taken a photograph when the lighting has been too bright in the background, creating shadows on the subjects face? Or even, taken a portrait photograph and the flash has created a washed out effect? If you answered yes to either of the questions then the shadow/highlight adjustment is for you! This tool lightens or darkens parts of an image based on surrounding pixels.
If you want to work on a specific area of an image e.g. a person's face, use the marquee too tool or apply the adjustment to the entire image or a layer.
When you are ready to apply the adjustment go to Image > Adjustments > Shadow/Highlight.

The image above has no changes.

In the image above the Highlights have been increased reducing the glare from the flash.
